Gifts of a mother...

There are many gifts I would like to give to my child: happiness, patience, confidence, love, compassion and many more. First, I have to "BE" the gifts ~ children learn through imitation. And so my truly wonderful and challenging journey into motherhood continues each day.

AMAZING READS - these are my top 3 books.

Parenting from the Inside Out - Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and Mary Hartzell, M.ED.

How many parents have found themselves thinking: I can't believe I just said to my child the very thing my parents used to say to me! Am I just destined to repeat the mistakes of my parents? In Parenting from the Inside Out, child psychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and early childhood expert Mary Hartzell, M.Ed., explore the extent to which our childhood experiences actually do shape the way we parent. Drawing upon stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, they explain how interpersonal relationships directly impact the development of the brain, and offer parents a step-by-step approach to forming a deeper understanding of their own life stories, which will help them raise compassionate and resilient children.

Born out of a series of parents' workshops that combined Siegel's cutting-edge research on how communication impacts brain development with Hartzell's thirty years of experience as a child-development specialist and parent educator, Parenting from the Inside Out guides parents through creating the necessary foundations for loving and secure relationships with their children. (Tarcher 2004)

Simplicity Parenting - Kim John Payne and Lisa M. Ross

I love this guy, if you get a chance to go to a lecture, he is a wonderful speaker. This book will happily live in your library and be referenced for many years, I have read it twice already. A real gem!
This is what it says on his website, I could not have said it better:

Imagine your life… with a sense of ease as you begin to limit distractions and say no to too much, too fast, too soon.

Today’s busier, faster, supersized society is waging an undeclared war . . . on childhood.

As the pace of life accelerates to hyperspeed – with too much stuff, too many choices, and too little time – children feel the pressure. They can become anxious, have trouble with friends and school, or even be diagnosed with behavioral problems.  Now, in defense of the extraordinary power of less, internationally renowned family consultant Kim John Payne helps parents reclaim for their children the space and freedom that all kids need, allowing their children’s attention to focus and their individuality to flourish.

Based on over twenty years’ experience successfully counseling busy families, Simplicity Parenting teaches parents how to worry and hover less-and how to enjoy more. For those who want to slow their children’s lives down but don’t know where to start, Simplicity Parenting offers both inspiration and a blueprint for change. - Kim John Payne.
